Community Advocacy

For over 9 years I have been an advocate for children and adults with disabilities.  My journey began in 2004 as I realized the need in my community for assisting parents in getting support for their children.  Through the need to advocate for my own children I was introduced to and trained through the Parent Leadership Support Project (PLSP) of the Georgia Advocacy Office, and also took courses with the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education.  Through PLSP I met other advocates, who assisted me in gaining advocacy skills, learning more about how to effectively utilize opportunities for services, and documentation available to assist other parents.

I continue to assistin parents in letter writing and finding community resources needed for their children.  For several years, through my own business, Faith of a Child Consulting, I found better services for children in Henry, Spalding, Fulton, Fayette, and Clayton counties.  As a Family Services Worker, or Parent
Advocate in Cobb County, I went to meetings with parents, and assisted them as a liaison with community organizations in getting what their children needed.  Sometimes that might be a better reading program, or simply bedroom furniture, where they had none.

I also work as an independent advocate with others writing and commenting on government policy related to disability issues, in connection with Educate America.

I have experience advocating with persons who have a wide range of diagnoses, such as:
  • Autism (all of the spectrum)
  • PTSD
  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the subset with Effects
  • ADHD
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • persons with language disorders
  • the Deaf
  • Cleft Palate and Tinnitus
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • other genetic disorders
  • learning disabilities
I am available for questions via email and telephone.
